When tales are told of valiant heroes in history, a handful stand out as some of the most well-known and revered of them all. Although the two in the title are not as famous as Superman or Spiderman, this does not make their tale any less epic. Both Achilles and Beowulf brought a new style of hero to the table. The two heroes had their flaws, however paid it back in spades with the bravery displayed in their respective epics. What is interesting about these two heroes is that their stories were written in completely different time periods, by peoples who were geographically extremely far apart. Beowulf was written in the estimated early eighth century in Denmark, while The Iliad, Achilles tale, was written by Homer many millennia ago in†¦show more content†¦Grendel, hearing the boisterous Danes celebrates Beowulf’s arrival, races over to the Mead-hall. The warrior strips down, saying that he will fight Grendel on equal terms. One he arrives, the battle between two beg ins. Grendel learns quickly that Beowulf is not a normal warrior; his strength outmatching Grendel’s. When the monster tries to escape in the face of this superior strength, Beowulf tears the arm off Grendel. Though Grendel does manage to escape, his wound proves to be fatal. Overjoyed at the result of the battle, king Hrothgar showers Beowulf with gold and gifts. Songs are sung in his praise and the festivities last until yet another monster appears. The mother of Grendel desired vengeance for her son’s death, and takes the life of Aeschere, the kings most trusted adviser. With this turn of events, Beowulf’s services are requested once again. Beowulf, his men, and the king go off to find the last demon. Beowulf takes the lead and manages to slay the mother using a giant’s sword. His fame had spread like wildfire throughout the kingdoms. With the last of King Hrothgar’s problems dead, Beowulf’s services are no longer needed. Beowulf and the remainder of his men return to Geatland. There, he is once again showered with praise. Most of the items that Hrothgar gave to Beowulf were given to Hygelac (King of Geatland) who rewards him. A war broke out and both Hygelac and his son die. Many educators are beginning to realize the benefits of year-round schooling. Even though year-round education is not traditional, year-round schooling should be implemented because year-round education increases academic achievement, frequent breaks allow students and teachers to recharge, and track plans relieve overcrowding. Year-round students still retain school holidays, but these holidays are distributed throughout the year. These breaks created are called intersessions. Year-round schools offer optional intersession classes during breaks, such as remedial classes for struggling students. â€Å"Intersessions prov ide students who need additional help with extra time for learning or a chance to learn through unconventional methods. Classes include a wide range of learning opportunities, from robotics to math to cooperative games† (Shields et al.). Students typically need time to catch up with their classes. Year-round education understands this concept. â€Å"These schools are also providing remediation and enrichment for students during the breaks so that students have opportunities to relearn material, practice skills, catch up, or experience nonacademic enrichment activities continuously throughout the year† (Huebner 83). If and when children fall behind, catch-up work can be done much more quickly compared to a traditional calendar. The intersessions provide a perfect amount of time to catch up on work and recharge before returning to school the next week. The Consequences of Grade Inflation We’ve all been pleasantly surprised by receiving a higher grade than expected on a school assignment or exam. Unfortunately, the average grade being given to today’s college student does not reflect the quality of the work submitted, and it is having a negative effect on students. Students end up using valuable grant and loan money taking developmental classes, because they received passing grades in core subjects when they should have failed. Teachers have adapted their grading system to reflect the under-developed skills of the students. This practice handicaps students during their academic years, as well as their post-graduation and entry into the workforce. Through a more rigid grading system, today’s students would improve their work ethic and become more prepared to face post-graduation challenges. The problem we are discussing is called â€Å"grade inflation†, and it has become widespread on campuses across Ameri ca. In the 1950’s, the average GPA for college students was 2.52; by 2006, that figure had risen to 3.11 (Newlon). The schools are no longer upholding its power to engage with students as to how education should be treated. The institutions themselves are to blame since they did not really become strong enough to face the changes in the society. They go with the way of the social structure even though they know that they are losing power each day a neglected student enters its corridors. As a clear example, the main objective of today’s universities is to sustain its existence. Of course, no man made institution can survive this capitalist driven world without concerning itself to raising funds. So in effect, schools have become more and more commercialized and providing fewer opportunities for it to interact with the students. Even though the schools have their own shortcomings, it cannot be denied that the society itself is the proponent of such absence of direction. It is very rare that you will find a person talking about the good stuff about nature, very sentiment, and holds his ideal dream of becoming a part of this vast universe. It is very tricky to find such people since each of us interacting with one another are â€Å"supposedly† engaged on our own ideals. So how can we ever distinguish an individual with a direction in life? Philosophically speaking, it is very true that schools reflect only that of society’s character. However, because of such notion, they have tied themselves up to the backdoor of philosophical stability by not meddling with what the external society wishes to track. Universities just accepted the fact that they as mere instruments rather than thinkers which can actually inflict change. They remain silent and just become mirrors which only serve to bounce back what they have been given. Each one of us has his own opinion, own direction in life. But just because we are blessed with such power it does not necessarily mean that everything we are dealing with is in accordance to our principles. One should think first if actions and mindsets represent that of a true thinking human.
